Central Coast Bleeding gums Treatment
Why do you bleed from your gums? Most of the time, people get bleeding gums when they’re brushing or flossing, because they’ve started to develop gingivitis.
Gingivitis develops when plaque builds along the gumlines throughout the day and isn’t completely removed with thorough brushing and flossing. Gradually, soft tissue infections develop. If untreated, gingivitis can progress in to gum disease (periodontitis) and lead to tooth loss.
It can also be a sign of inflammation else where in the body. Your gut health, and gum health are closely related. At Helix Dentistry we aim to treat your mouth as a sign for the health of your entire body.
Underlying Conditions Linked with Bleeding Gums
Can stress and anxiety cause your gums to bleed? What about gut health and bleeding gums?
Most of the time, things like anxiety, digestive problems and bleeding gums do not go hand in hand. However, your oral health is a reflection of your overall wellness. If you’re currently suffering from severe medical conditions and take medications for them, there is a risk of oral side-effects such as gum tenderness, dry mouth (xerostomia) and a possible increase in tooth decay.
Men and women with chronic gum infections tend to find it more challenging to control other health problems (and make it more difficult to conceive or reach their full term during pregnancy.)
Bleeding Gums Treatment
How do you fix bleeding gums?
The best treatment is early intervention. As soon as you’re starting to notice blood on your toothbrush or floss, it’s typically within the window of time where gingivitis can be fully reversed.
If there is only gum bleeding around one tooth, it may be due to something lodged just under the gums, such as food debris like a popcorn kernel or something that was missed during flossing. Teeth that are crooked, rotated, or have bone loss due to past gum disease are more prone to localised areas of bleeding because it’s easier for tartar to form in those areas.
What can you do to stop gingivitis?
Angle your toothbrush towards your gums and gently brush them twice per day, for a minimum of two minutes each session. Then, wrap the floss snuggly around each tooth and rub it up and down the side, sliding it under the gumlines to disrupt biofilm accumulation just underneath the edges of the soft tissue.
Dedicated brushing and flossing will typically reverse all symptoms of gingivitis and bleeding gums within two weeks. But if it doesn’t, there may be a more serious underlying condition: gum disease.
Advanced gum disease
Advanced gum disease causes more problems than just bleeding gums. It’s also linked with:
- Halitosis or bad breath (check out our bad breath clinic)
- Bone and tooth loss
- Pneumonia,
- Stroke
- Diabetes,
- Premature labour, and other pregnancy complications
- Many more!
To benefit your smile and your overall health, you may need to talk to our Long Jetty dentist about having a series of deep cleanings (scaling and root planing) completed to remove calcified bacteria that are causing your gums to bleed.
We will also assess why your body is exhibiting signs of inflammation in the first place.
