Helix Dentistry is proud to be one of the first dental practices on the Central Coast to offer Myobrace – a natural solution to straightening teeth, without the need for braces. Spearheading the way for children’s dentistry, the Myobrace treatment is recommended for children who display signs of overcrowding, have issues with mouth breathing, snore, and have a habit of thumb sucking.

What is Myobrace?

Myobrace is a no-braces orthodontic approach to help straighten your teeth and jaws. Treatment addresses the poor oral habits that are the real cause of crooked teeth.

The Myobrace appliance is used in conjunction with exercise based therapy that can be prescribed to children from the age of just three years old. It can also be recommended for adult patients in some cases.

How long is Myobrace treatment?

Generally, Myobrace treatment is similar to that of regular braces treatment. The difference between the two methods is that instead of being fixed to the teeth, the Myobrace appliance is easily removable and only requires one to two hours of use each day, as well as being worn overnight while sleeping.

How does Myobrace treatment work?

Myobrace treatment comprises of four main steps which commences with an initial consultation at which point, a treatment process is established. Expectations are set and detailed information about the treatment plan and associated therapy are discussed with the patient, including dedicating time towards changing habitual behaviour.

The treatment is then broken into the four phases which include:

  • Habit Correction
  • Arch Development
  • Dental alignment
  • Retention

What are the benefits of Myobrace?

The aim of Myobrace treatment is to train and eradicate the bad influences associated with each patient’s dental and facial development, not to simply straighten the front teeth. Optimal treatment is for young children, as improving poor muscular habits in patients is best from a young age. This can lead to better facial development and allow patients to achieve their full genetic potential.

One particular risk associated with mouth breathing and jaw development is snoring and sleep apnoea. Shown to potentially harm the sleep patterns in adults and children, proper breathing and jaw development may have benefits of better long term sleep.

Limitations

While Helix Dentistry are strong advocates for the Myobrace system, it is important to note that braces remain the most efficient way of straightening and moving teeth. Our aim is to use activities and techniques to correct habits during the jaw development phase, however, we cannot guarantee that the results will be perfect and will eliminate the need for braces.

The results achieved do also depend on the patient’s compliance and dedication to using the appliance. Should braces be required in the future to achieve the perfect smile, the Myobrace system often speeds up the process of orthodontics and at times eradicates the need to remove teeth.
